CONFIRMED?????: The Origin of the Spina The Bee game, 30 years later!

January 12, 2013

As reported a few weeks ago HERE, the possible origin of the unfinished Intellivision game 'Spina the Bee' fit almost perfectly with the description of the Maya the Bee franchise. Now thanks to a tip, We can now see that there was an actual game released on the Philips VG5000 system. The game is titled "L' ABEILLE Spina The Bee". L'ABEILLE is also translated in French to none other than: Maya the Bee!  Below is an actual in-game screen shot of the Philips VG5000 version in action. Almost identical to the Mattel Intellivision version in terms of gameplay. This Philips VG5000 version was made by Nice Ideas, who also made ZZZZZZ! Spina the Bee for Intellivision. Here is a quick list of the games Nice Ideas has worked on. Compare the this game to the Atari 8Bit PC game Biene Maja (Maya the Bee) as reported in the previous article and you see a clear similarity in gameplay. Although it can not be said for 100% certainty that Spina the Bee is in fact based on Maya the Bee, there is a high possibility. We may never know the behind the scene details of what happened so long ago.
